Plug Gap?
Hey everyone, need a little help, it's an easy one.
First let me say I'm new to the forum and I am not a mechanic, I'm a computer guy, but I'm eager to learn. Title says it all. Starting with a little simple maintenance before I take her out for the season, going to change the spark plugs and need to know the plug gap.
Got a 1996 FLSTF, bone stock as far as I know, was told it may have been jetted (?) when the previous owner installed V&H short shots but not sure.. I've searched the forums and Google and can't get a straight answer. Hoping my fellow EVO owners can shed some light.
Thanks!

First welcome to the forum.
Second get a Harley service manual for your bike if you plan on working on it.
Set your gap at about 40.
If the bike is running good I wouldn't worry about the jets.
If this bike is new to you I suggest you change all the fluids so that you know what is in there and that it is good.

I kinda figured he would get that as all plug gap tools that I have seen are marked in thousandths.
If you have seen one marked in mm, inches, or BitCoin I would be very interested in seeing it.
When I first got my '96 Evo I pulled the plugs to check them. They were auto-lite plugs gapped at front .025, rear .030. The bike started and ran fine. I set them to .040 and didn't notice any difference. I guess it's not as critical as the manual would have you believe. As plugs wear the electrode wears down ,so you gap gets bigger. I would think a smaller gap would give you a hotter spark, as the electricity doesn't have to jump the bigger gap. Either way it didn't seem to matter on my bike.,,
Thanks everyone for the replies. And, thanks for the tip on the fluids texashillcountry. Hoe to get a manual soon. Going to leave the jets alone since it does run great. If it ain't broke you know..
Thanks again everyone!
Thanks again everyone!
