Default Help again

Put in new cam. ez push rods and lifters. The timing marks of the cam was put right on. Pushrods were adjusted to Andrews directions. The pick up senser was marked before removing and put back in the same position. Went to crank it up knowing it would take a few seconds for the oil pressure to build and the Fatty won't pop. The gas was on and etc. Going to re-adjust pushrods tomorrow to see if thats the problem. But what else would I be looking for?

Start simple....

If you think you've adjusted the valves wrong, go ahead and re-adjust them. They'd have to be tight in order for the bike not to build compression and fire.

Otherwise, make sure you're getting spark.

Make sure you're getting fuel (maybe the petcock is off, make sure the vac. valve in the petcock is functioning if you have one).

Check the timing.

Check compression.

Some additional thoughts...

Sensor wires get pinched / cut?

Verify top dead center in relation to vales and sensor cup.

Should get you running.

What type cam in what type motor?

Regards!

Verify top dead center in relation to vales and sensor cup?????????? I don't have a book that shows or explains relationship. I have a 93 Harley soft tail book but it doesn't go into very much detail. Years ago I had a Panhead book that was thicker than my mom's Bible. Too bad they don't make them like that any more. To your question of cam. I put in a Andrews EV27. When I opened up the cam cover, I turned the engine over until you saw the timing marks on the gears. One on the pinion gear and the other on the oil gear as it was showing in the picture of the book. Pulled the cam like they said and put the new cam in with out moving the crank. The only time I moved the crank was adjusting the push rods. My bike is a 93 Fatty. So I went out tonite to check my timing mark on the crank and I am getting compression just as the timing mark comes up. Just don't want to tear it down again unless I am sure thats is my problem. The bike has been sitting for a month with a Battery Tender but it was running before I put it undercover for the Winter. I will check my pushrod adjustment to be sure. Oh yes all the wiring is fine I only disconnect the sensor to get my timing cover out of the way. Checked the connection and seems to be fine. Thanks guys for the help. I hope it cranks over tomorrow. It is getting warmer here and this puppy has to run for sure.

Verify top dead center by viewing relation to piston to position of intake/exhaust valves.... Gotta pull the plug and remove the covers for the pushrods...

But before anything else...

Are you getting ANY spark at theplugs?
What about any gas to the cylinders?

Seems to me something very EASILY has beenoverlooked since you were very detailed in getting the marks aligned before putting that cam cone on....

Edited for spelling.

Thanks guys it came alive this afternoon. Went back and set my TDC and readjusted the pushrods. I think I was in a hurry and adjusted them at the lowest point as I seen the valve close but this morning I went into Andrews web site and they said to wait at least 10 minutes for the lifters to bleed off. So I did and that was the trick. Sounds good. TDC and giving the oil time to bleed out of the lifters.

Good to hear. I'll keep that in mind when I do mine next week.

Good job!
Did you put new lifters in as well? What brand? That whole lifter "bleed" process can be a pain in the a**. Ran an older shovel with an A grind and spent a better part of a afternoon bleeding them off...

Hows the EV27 grind pull the bike on the bottom end? Day and night?

Yep, put in new lifters. That what puzzled me because they weren't loaded up with oil. But I didn't do the TDC at first. When I put the cam in I could see that the front cylinder lifters was at it's lowest point.[so I thought] Well cranking it trying to start it pumped up the lifters. So after reading Andrews instructions I noticed when I was adjusted the exhaust lifter it felt like it had no pressure on the pushrod. So once I adjusted them the correct way, TDC, lifters at their lowest point, it kicked right over. Actually sort of startle me because I wasn't expecting it to start. I was grinning from ear to ear. Now my lifters are Johnson Lifters. Was going to go with Harley but changed my mind. Right now I only took on a short test run because my rear turn signals are off. I am relocating my rear turn signals with some Badlands set so I have some loose wires . But it does feel good. It kind of sucks because I hear a whine that everyone talks about now. I was hoping to get away with installing it and no problems. So I will change out the gear from the old cam later on. From what I understand the whine is more annoying than anything else.

Yeah, you'd think that with an enormousamount of adjustment on the pushrods, it would be good. Come back two hours later (or six pack later) and they are looser than shi*... adjust some more... and then more again.

Good job to MTNLVR for nailing the diagnosis on the head!

Good to hear the results!
