Starter Kickback.
Here is my issue: I have a 96 electra glide with a 127 super g xxx carb 2 into 1 pipe with ultima / 2000i programmable ignition. 450cc battery 1.7 ultima starter High quality cables ect ect. battery full charged. I have gone through 2 clutch basket ring gears and 3 starter gears. The damn thing is supposed to be set to 3 dead revs, no spark . But this thing tries to start at the first hint of me pushing starter button. the Kicks back like a sumbitch..... should I retard the ignition scrap this one ?? Not use the choke when starting??
No, just get compression releases fitted......I have a Chopper that I look after for someone with a similar motor, he stubbornly refuses to fit CR's and goes through batteries and starter parts like you wouldn't believe.
Solve the dead rev problem, and your broken parts will stop.
Check if the comp releases are actually working, or venting, could have a plugged port.
I take it the problem mostly happens when the engine is still warm, it's probably firing off on compression alone, and the dead rev setting won't help that.
Carbon buildup in the chambers maybe?,may need to spray some seafoam in the carb while running to get some carbon out.

Could have a lifter bleeding down?

2T kit is that if a valve is
held open when the engine is not running, valve spring pressure
will not cause lifters to bleed down and collapse. Collapsed lifters
can cause hard starting and excessive valve train noise when
engine is restarted. Adjustable pushrods must be used with the
HL2T Kit.

on shop hot rods years back we ran into this issue and originally -- we re wire the start kill switch / horn switch and using both hands you can crank the engine and then flip the horn switch IE now the kill switch -- after the motor is cranking to start as some bikes need to be fueled as soon as they go - it takes a bit to get useto and riding another bike you will always blow the horn instead of starting it hahahahahahahha
the second design as also to re wire the start stop switch but using two hands on the throttel side one can press the start buttom get the starter going, then flip the kill swich to fire the motor most of the guy prefer this set up
CAUTION : you can now when the ignition is on crank the bike in gear on the kickstand ( it will fall over not if ) unless you use the netural switch as a safety -- johnjzjz

Well figured it out. Rear cyl compression realease closing to fast. I simply hold it down while cranking the engine fires and I let go! Easy fix. Thanks for all the comments.
