Setting the timing.........
Well, my apologies to those of you who told me NOT to use the two dots to set the timing. I took her for the first ride since I set the timing...............
Pop! Bang! Pop, Pop bang! And that was less than 1/4 of a mile. Pulled into a parking lot and moved it back to the lines I scribed...... had a nice ride......
Going back to look for a single dot on the flywheel.
I can't friggin believe the factory shop manual was WRONG!

My guess on your issues with this is the box is not doing the job even harley intended - the advance curv is stalling and not going full sweep to total advance - when you have to lead the timing to get it to run correctly that is the clue < its time for a dyna / i like the ultima ignition and you can do it with those on the cheap, by hooking them to the OEM coil and have it work as intended _ duel fire both plugs all the time firing every 180 degrees
over the many years HD has had the black box ignition that is about as advanced in techno as a splinter used a sewing needle

I still can't figure out why my shop manual said to set the timing with the two dots............I guess I may have done it incorrectly.

you may have a non-stock flywheel. The Truett & Osborn I have, Stroker, has two dots for TDC No. 1 and the vertical line for advanced timing mark. Why they chose to make it difficult by changing I do not know or understand.
Pinetop
This is from his ev27 thread. Pics show single line, one dot and two dots.

Well, at least I didn't find it after looking and looking..............I'm taking another shot at it today.
I'm guessing, if I'm 15 degrees off, she's not running to full potential......
I'm betting it's not that far out though. Like I said, I moved it back to the scribe mark, and she's running well.

TD my 99 softail hd book says the same as your book. it said something like make sure your voes is working to get proper timing......2 dots at 1000-1500 front cylinder advance timing....single line for tdc........keep us posted...... good luck........
