Default 95 Heritage, Speedometer

OK, Speedometer not working.

Lifted the front tire, disconnected the cable at the meter, spun the front tire and the cable does not move.

So the cable or the gear or both?

Anyone know of a thread that explains the replacement procedure?
Thanks.

If you disconnected the cable from the drive gear the cable won't spin.

Pull off the drive gear, put a small screwdriver in it and spin the tab on the drive gear. If it doesn't spin your drive gear is toast.
Pull the cable off the back of the speedo and twist one end of the inner cable with your fingers. If the other end of the inner cable doesn't turn as well your cable is toast.

I got a cable and a speedo drive from a 1995 FLSTC sitting on the garage wall. I'll practically give 'em away if ya want...
Lemme know,
Tom

Tee&Vee - thanks for the offer, but I bought a drive gear a few years ago when my speedo went out, just need to find it. I ordered the cable this morning.

texashillcountry - I didn't disconnect the cable from the drive gear because I could not figure out how. I'm going to change them both next week, just have to locate my manual to figure it out.

I need my manual to pull the drive gear out, I have never pulled the tire off, and it looks like this is required to get to the drive gear.

Thanks lads.

I'm sorry I didn't understand in your original post that meter is referring to the speedometer.

Do you have a jack?

If you do all you have to do is jack up the bike till the front tire is just resting on the ground then take off the axel nut then the 2 cap nuts and slide the axel out.

the speedo cable twists onto the speedo gear. You may need to grab it with some channel locks or something so that you can twist it off.

Since you already have the cable off the speedometer I would just take it off the drive gear without taking the drive gear off the bike.
Then, if you have to, remove the axel and drive gear.
