Bike is a '98 Ultra Classic and is making what sounds like a heart beat but only on like every 4th revolution. Gets louder the hotter she gets but no banging or tapping. Also seems that when I rode her she seemed to bounce around. I mean the whole bike at about 40 mph. I just replaced the motor mount, compensator and nut. This sound was there after an escort ride and have been told its a connecting rod but not sure. Bile has 81k miles and was running tight and great til this happened she also started blowing oil out the carb which is a new thing. HELP! this is the sound but on a different bike:
WEIRD! But one thing for sure,if it was a rod knock, you will know! Or Piston slap either one... TO me, I don't here a "knock", sounds like some kind of air leak..but can't tell in the vid.
Listened to it again..kinda sounds like a knock. put a vid of YOUR bike..
It's hard to tell from a video, but it sounds like a deep knock to me. If someone experienced listened to it in person and says it's a rod bearing, I'd be inclined to believe him. 81k on the clock supports that guess as well. May be time for an overhaul. Unless you turn your own wrenches, the Harley reman program is probably the best way to go.
But do nothing expensive until you get a good, in person, diagnosis. IMO.
with that much mechanical noize going on if you are not very handy at repairing - i would look into a harley re man engine if you take the thing apart at those miles nothing but the out side covers will be saved - it has 80,000 miles looks to be in nice shape the bike but its been driven in 100 degree air most of its life and harley had issues with rod bearings 96 97 98 tightness in those years -
in my shop it would cost 1500 to 2000 more than having harley reman it, and we tell the customer and give them the option - our motor will run better and wont be leaking at 20,000 miles but it is more money
from the sound its the rear rod / on the crank pin the hardness has worn off on only one side say 5 oclock to 11 oclock = reason for the skip in the sound
its hard to tell from a recording. to me it sounds like a hole in the piston or valves not opening but I think john may be right either way its time to pull it apart
I would do a compression test if both cylinders are good then its the rods
