Default Swingarm bearing check

Quick question for the experts. Went through the manual not clear on it. I want to get the rear wheel off to do the bearings while the weather is rainy again, while it's off I want to check the swingarm bearings. If I unbolt the shocks will I be able to assess the condition of the swingarm bearings? Also lifted off the ground the shocks won't be under any preload will they? I don't want to tear the swingarm off if they feel snug and aren't sloppy. 98 fxdl

Yes you will. The swingarm is mounted on the back of the trans. It is quite heavy, so support it when you take the shocks off. I think you have 'cleve blocks' which may feel a bit mushy, due to their design. There are aftermarket bushings available to replace them, which will be more secure and remove any movement in the pivot. You also have rubber mounts for the engine/trans, which may have a slightly detectable movement.
