Took the rear wheel out to change the tyre and thought I would check out the belt while I was at it.....ooh dear....I found 2 holes and 3 edge splits...27K miles but 15 years of use is what I got out of it.

Have you ever cut one in half? You will find three steel bands in there spaced equally apart. If the rocks or cuts don't interfere with these bands then the belt is still good.
Got 115,000 st. mi. on mine, two of the bands had rusted through because of water intrusion and the third one broke with structural failure.
