By the time you notice the damage is done...

How do you figure that?

The light comes on as soon as the pressure drops too low, and it will get your attention as long as you have the correct bulb installed.

All the oil flowing in an Evo engine is coming from the same place, the pressure element of the pump.

The pressure relief valve controls how much oil goes to the top and bottom end, and the overall oil pressure.

Until pressure reaches a certain point, all oil goes to the top end, once it gets above that point oil will also be directed to the bottom end.

It is one system.

I believe there are two elements to oil pump, pressure side that goes to lifter screen then through lifters and a scavenge side, the scavenge side goes to the filter then returns oil to the tank, both gears are keyed and one can shear key while the other works, mine sheared the scavenge gear but the pump gear continued to pump somewhat.

Wink Oil, what oil?

I mounted oil and neutral lights just under the speedo. Would prefer to know I've just dumped all my oil on the road with the idiot light than with a seized engine at 70 mph.

OK I found the time yesterday to pull my bike apart found a small piece of the needle bearing lip in the bottom of cam chest & broke tooth on the pinion gear , top end looked real good std bore , so a hone job & new rings will take care of that part ,need to replace the needle bearing & pinion gear along with the plastic breather valve gear , any one have the pt numbers for the torreton bearing & S&S breather valve gear , I did find all the small broken parts in the cam chest got lucky there , can't get the pics to post , so I'll try later

torrington b 138, i believe it is part number 9058( doing this from memory) correct me if wrong on HD part number. but this number is for both bearings, you have to look at them at the counter to make sure they give you the right one.

Make sure you get the Torrington B138 by name. 9058 is the Harley part number for the inner cam bearing, which used to be the Torrington bearing, but if you go to the dealer and ask for a 9058 today, you will get the INA bearing, which you don't want.

Did you figure out where the needle bearing lip came from? Also, while you're in there, I'd spring for a new set of lifters if you haven't replaced them yet. The needles in the tappet rollers don't last forever (I know this the hard way). For my money, the stock HD tappets are plenty good, but I recommend changing them every 40,000 miles or so, no matter whose tappets you run.
