My son had my bike last week & called me when he got home & said the oil light just came on , , oil full & moving in & out of the tank 94 soft tail little over 66K miles so I got a new sending unit & oil change , changed the oil & light still on went to change the sending unit all good till Iput the nut on to hold the wire & the darn side of new unit broke right off , have to wait till Tuesday to get another sending unit , so weekend riding is
Bugger....that is not good. You can test it with an automobile sender and even ride it too but usually they are a shorter thread and will weep a bit of oil (not much oil compared to yer average Ironhead) but it could save your weekend.
I've never been a fan of idiot lights, By time you notice damage is done. Don't have one on mine, but think something not electrical, like a gauge would be the way to go. Then what?, You keep looking at the gauge every 5 minutes. They should make them to come on say at idle, go off at normal riding pressures. Maybe they do, not sure, just don't like the all or none thing.jmo.
Thanks spanner ,I still have the old unit ,I could put back on , the Engine sounds great no nose from lack of oil anywhere , I could just pull the light out

unwise. I blew an engine like this. Are you sure you are getting both high and low pressure flow. I did not know there are two flows in an evo and it cost me. I too observed return oil in tank but unless you have confirmed both i would not move it until l did confirm.
WOW thanks pinetop I didn't know that either ,I'll be sure to double check as I picked it up on a trailer but rode it both on & off & let it run about 5 min before changing the oil & filter , with no extra noises , man I just can't afford to put a new engine in right now

The idiot light gives you plenty of warning on a roller bearing motor like a Harley and about 5 seconds on a shell bearing motor like a car.
Both of those are more than you would get without one and they are placed where you can see them without looking down at your motor....idiot lights are the best thing you can have when it comes to oil flow on a Harley.

Thanks for the skinny on this, guess I thought HD were the same as cars. Feel more trusting of idiot lights now. Thanks again.
