Been spending a few days in the garage doing a "heart transplant" on my old '86 Tour Glide. Out with the old. In with the new. Started nicely and warmed up smoothly late last night. This morning and early afternoon I will be doing test runs to tune the carb "by the seat of my pants". Going to hit the road and feel how she's running and adjust accordingly. A fresh carb and updated intake really help.
It was shipped with a 295 / 70 and now that I've road tested it I understand why so many kept on me to upgrade. Performed really, really well right out of the box.
Only have put 30 miles on it but what a boost to performance and finally running the way I thought it should!
What's up with the loud intake vacuum noise on this setup? Reminded me of when we used to flip the air filter cover on the chevy 350s. Guess a bit louder pipes might drown out that different sound ... lol
Yes that large carb and breather will sound off but its typical S&S. I don't even notice it anymore, just natural.
With The 72 main my plugs are still gray. When I put in the 74 main they blackened up so I went back to the 72. I did not want to be lean with a 10-1 Cr. specially in the summer heat.
I get 47 Mpg with a Yost power tube.

47 mpg at altitude yes, over here at underwater level, in south La., that translates to about 44.
But still , I hear a lot of guys with almost stock engines say they getting mid 30's, I always think to myself that sucks and something's wrong .
I get 40+ with the 111 if I don't run it to hard, 47-50 with the reman 80ci I had before, don't know, maybe they pump the throttle all the time or something.
The worst I ever got was 33 running at 88 mph for a whole tank, with a headwind , and loaded down on a road trip.
I get 40 in my stock 80". I've gotten a little better in the past. After my rebuild, and the cylinders honed to about .30 over by now, I lost a couple. I'm ok with it, 50 would be nice, but I've never been close to that.
