I hate to post what I spent, since I'm either bragging or showing myself a fool, but I paid $5k for it. I think I did reasonably well. But honestly, I'd have given $7k for it.
Working out the plan here. I'm going to have my seller take it to a local dealer and have them put tires on it and give it a service. Anything in particular I should have them look for? I'm thinking as long as they are into it, may as well put a battery in (unless there's some reason to think the one that's in it is new), bleed out and replace all the brake fluid. Anything else I should have them do/check?
My schedule is pretty full for the next few weeks. Depending on how things unfold, I'll either fly to Philly and ride it home or have the dealer crate it up and ship it here.
The HD dealer that I called in Philly won't touch it. They don't want to deal with the potential problems on a 24 yo bike with a long distance owner.
Shipping companies are going to be a month out to get it here. I'd rather not lose that time, so I'm pretty much on to the idea of riding it back.
Anyone know of a good independent shop in Philly that I could take it to? Gonna need tires and a service and a once-over to make sure its good for the trip.
I'm not sure how far you are from the bike but as long as you have good rubber, charging is working properly, good brakes and it runs like it only has 20 k miles on it you should be able to change oil in all 3 holes and take a trip. These aren't like the twinkies, they have heart and will carry you wherever you want to go.
From the pics the tires do not look bad. But only an in person viewing would show cracks etc. If it was me I'd pack a bag. Check all fluids and air pressure and enjoy the ride home.
Well the deed is done. Found an outfit that will crate it up, and then we'll have her shipped from PA to NE. Sort of sorry I'm not riding it home, but I'm heading west with my family tomorrow, so I wouldn't be able to fly to Philly until next Friday. Between the cost of the flight/gas and a night or two in a motel, the crating/shipping is about the same. And I wasn't particularly looking forward to 18 more hours on the slab anyway (going to have enough of that going from Omaha to Jackson Hole and back).
BTW, spent some time on this today. My conclusion is that the dedicated bike shippers are cheaper, but they will get it to you when they are good and ready. Everyplace I called was talking about a month, more or less.
I'm getting it crated for $550. LTL freight on the run is going to be about $250. So for not much more than what the motorcycle guys wanted, I'll have it here next week.
Thanks for the help everyone. I'll update with some more pics after it gets here. Should be waiting for me when I get back.

My TC was shipped from Florida to LA and then to NZ....it took longer to get from FL to LA than it did from LA to Auckland but it did arrive in good shape.
