Sorry Spanners i couldnt resist as we probably have the same troubles getting stuff as you have .
Im wondering if the apperant " mating round shoulder " that is machined into the oem screws would be something that needs to be considered .?
Would a simple stainless washer be needed with replacement stainless screws ?
Im being very picky here , i know , but i just want to keep my *** out of the alligators on this rebuild.
Thanks for your help.
A wobble extension will also help from getting right up to the fins.
Yes , that is excellent info. but i have done such and even with a good angle to the screw ... my apperantly " good " 12 point sockets will not engage enough with the oem 12 point tappet block screws to install them but they were fine to remove them ??? Go figure ???
I dont know which is worst here in Ottawa ... trying to find a friggen 12 point socket or trying to find replacement screws .?! The whole thing is holding up my rebuild for a $5.00 part.! Gotta hate it when this happens.!
Like already mentioned, if the star-headed screws are that hard for you to deal with, just replace them with 1/4 socket-heads. The TC uses socket-heads to attach the covers.
Had a friend have the front block work-lose on a long ride. I can't begin to tell you how aggravating it is to have one down on the side of the road and NOBODY has a wrench that will fit. Sunday....out in the middle of nowhere and if it was not for the old gentleman that stopped, then went to town and had a friend open-up his shop to find a wrench we may still be on the side of the road.
I carry a 1/4" drive deep 1/4" 12 point socket in my saddle bag just for such a need. Also a complete 1/4" socket set, break over bar, and rachet. Probably never need them but just in case I have them.
All good advise but after many local parts store visits and enquiries , i have given up on this as it seems that this 12 point socket is a no show in this city .?
Have taken Spanners advise and am now looking for required replacement bolts with socket heads that dont require the 12 point socket.
If i remember correctly ., these tappet block bolts were the only ones on the motor requiring the 12 point socket .? My advise to all is to replace them during overhaul with more user friendly bolts .
