Until I added the Badlands, I just held it down best I could. But, I've since then stripped off the turn signals altogether. Point and hope for the best! (use hand signals)

Blue SOG: Without a doubt this is the ideal method, I use it often.

Omaha: Actually the switch for the manual turn signals is different than the switch for the self cancelling, therefore they are a little easier to hold on whilst using the clutch/throttle.
They have a little nib on them where as the newer type is just flat, this is one way you can tell if you had the original manual type or the new self cancelling type.

I have a 94 FXSTC which originally had the self-cancelling turn signals. However, the module under the tank that controls this just died, so I ordered the Badlands module. I'll be installing this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes.

Harley toyed with self canceling on some models in the early 90's, which were problematic...they did not get it right until they changed to the electronic speedo...96 on softails...some models lagged a year or two behind.

Just FYI, the self canceling turn signals arrived in '91, so your '90 wouldn't have them, Neither did my '89 Sporty. You had to hold the button down to keep them on.

One year (it may have been '86, not sure), the signals were push on/push off. Problem with that is, of course, remembering to turn them off. I know this issue well, since I lost my self-canceling feature when I changed my speedo to the '62 style (no reed switch in the speedo).

Just installed the Badlands turn signal module.

When my turn signals were working, I would push the button once to turn on, and once to turn off. If I didn't turn them off manually, they would turn off automatically after a certain distance depending on my speed (reed switch from speedo)

Once the OEM module crapped out, I would push the turn signal button and the the signal would come on, but not flash (this would happen for either signal) The only time they would flash is when I hit them simultaneously and then my hazards would work the way they were supposed to.

wiring up the badlands module was pretty simple. All original wires from the bike are used, except the one from the speedo reed switch. Now the signals work just like before (turn on/off manually). They will also cancel automatically after 11 seconds, regardless of speed (since not connected to speedo)

Overall - great product for replacing broken OEM module, or for older Harleys that didn't originally have self-cancelling signals

This was the first thing I noticed when I got my '84 FXRT. When I asked about it, I was told it was "the ultimate in self-cancelling signals". So far, I've never felt the need to change it.
