The inner primary case for Dyna FXD fits also the Softail ?

Four year ago i purchased an aftermarket inner primary chromed. The seller was an american guy who assumed that part would of fit perfectly my FXD.Today i was trying to intall that brilliant thing...but i ve found that not all the holes of the primary match the holes of the basement

It can be hard to tell the difference between the two if you haven't saw the two (Dyna/softail) side by side. The obvious give away besides the non matching the bolt holes is the Dyna inner primary is between 1/2-3/4" shorter then a softail.

I also understand that a softail primary is longer, but except for the different hole location those two look identical. Would the different hole correspond to an earlier or later transmission case?

Yeah, I always thought the softtail primary was longer, like the 4 speed shovelhead primary. I, to, think this difference is related to a transmission difference or something else.
