Just finished mounting up the head pipe on my thunder header, and when I tighten the bolts down i don't get very much before it seems tight. The nuts are flush with the end of the stud only.
The pipe seems to be seated with the cylinder but there's about a fingers distance between flange and the cylinder head.
Is this right? I was under the assumption that the flanges are supposed to be flat against the cylinder head.
The flange should not be flush with the head. If the header seal ring (not gasket) is wider than what was on there, that would explain the difference in length of engagement of the nut. If you're unsure, slighty loosen the nuts and make sure the pipes are where they're supposed to be. Hope this helps.
did you remove the old exhaust gasket out of the exhaust port? you have to use a pick or awl to catch under it and pull out. that will stop your pipes from going all the way in. my flanges are flush with the heads and there is 5 threads showing on studs. with thunder header installed
