Richness problem?
I have a 2003 SuperGlide that's carburated.I got Khrome Werks HP+ 2 1/2 inch slip-ons, SE breather kit and a 48 jet installed this weekend. It sounds great and runs like a bat outta hell... but...
I rode it from the dealership to the camp site on Saturday, about 10 miles. I was working, so I didn't start it again til Sunday. When I did a big cloud of smoke puffed out of the pipes, and the smell is very rich... It'll almost burn your eyes. And it's got black soot starting to collect. If you rub your fingers on the inside of the pipe you can see the black on them. It also seems to idle a little fast and has backfired through the carb a couple of times... All this in about 15 miles total.... I called the dealership and the guy told me that the soot is normal, and the smell and richness may just be a characteristic of these pipes and my bike with this set-up. This sounds like a crock to me. I'm not totally stupid about motors... If I'm running too rich I'm getting bad milage and I'll be fouling my plugs pretty soon. And If there's soot collecting in the pipes, it's collecting on the valves and pistons too isn't it?
What do you guys think? Dealer told me to ride it for a while and see if it gets better (break in?). I did the breather and rejet because everyone told me I couldn't do JUST the pipes.
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Mike
You got a typical moronic answer from your dealership on this one. Ride it a while and see if it gets better? What's going to change,is the 48 jet going to get broke in and be fine after a few miles?
