so a while backthe oil pump in my 88 sportster went. it snowballed into a few other things. long story short i ended up having to pull the cams and pump drive gear, and clean out metal shavings from the oil pump gear being destroyed.
right now everything is back together. the cams are all lined up, and im getting ready to fill the oil tank. i looked inside just to make sure there was nothing in it, but i look and i see metal shavings. i stuck my magnet in there and moved it around, and out came a GOOD amount of metal shavings and chunks. now im worried theres metal inside my crankcase. any suggestions guys?
also, i got out a peice of metal that looked like a straightened out paper clip, about 2 inches long, and it looks to be melted a little on both ends. any ideas what that could be? the motor ran fine after the pump went, i ran it for about 45 seconds while diagnosing the bad pump.
split the cases and clean everything out. flush your oil system and replace any and all parts that show any wear. doing it half way will ensure that a week later, you'll be doing it all again.
