Well...the shop called and said my parts are ready to be picked up.

He didn't find anything wrong with the heads...valve clearance .002 exhaust, .001 intake...seals intact...cleaned and baked the heads to check for porosity and cracks visible by oil weepage but found none.

Rings had proper gap, but he said one of the scraper rings (not sure if front or rear at the moment) showed an air gap when installed in the cylinder. He's sticking to his original theory...rings overstressed when installed which allowed oil into the combustion chamber and somehow into the intake port.

I'll pick up the parts tonight or tomorrow.

If what he claims is the case then the cylinders should show signs of the rings not sealing.Post us a picture of your cylinder walls and your piston thrust surfaces.

I will post some tonght when I get home.

Thrust surfaces would be the forward and rear cylindrical surfaces of the piston right, the surfaces 90° to the wrist pin?

Well...here's the best pics of my cylinders, front and rear. And for pistons, here the front front, front rear, rear front, rear rear.

Not the best pics, but what exactly are you looking for anyway.

I can't be sure of the rear cylinder because of the lighting but I don't see any abnormal scuffing. Check the cylinders for round ness and install a fresh set of Hasting Rings. You have a great deal of oil in between the two compression rings on the rear piston and the top of the piston has no carbon build up which tells me a lot of oil is passing by something to soak the top of the piston.

Good Luck

Talk about a soaking...my wallet's running dry this summer. Another $400 gone. Cylinders were re-inspected for size, roundness and taper...all good. Deglazed / honed. Heads cleaned, inspected for cracks, re-checked valves and guides...no cracks, intakes at .001" clearance, exhaust at .002" clearance, head are good. New seals and rings, not sure of what brand.

With any luck, I'll be ready to fire it up today.

Remember your pipe is coated with oil inside....it will take a few miles (4 to 5) to burn it out, so don't throw the bike over the hill when you start her up and she still blows smoke.
Good Luck

Ha! I'd have a pretty hard time throwin' it, but I could roll it down the hill into the lake.

I got rid of a lot of the oil in the pipe. I went to the carwash and spayed the pipe with degreaser and let is sit a few times, then power washed the ID. Damn those streams hurt like hell when you spray your hand from a 1/4 inch away. Got them pretty clean.

Just got done with pushrods and rockers, now all that's left is the carb, a/c, heat shields, tank, dash, plugs, gas and oil check.

Doc, you think I should make the 30-60-30 runs right away after warming the engine for a minute or two and then making my way to the edge of town skipping the heat-cycle routine?
