I have a 2001 nightrain, I have been experiencing popping sounds while cruising, roughly 60 mph, but it does it at other speeds too. At first thought it might be electrical til last night. I filled my gas tank up and the problem seemed to fix it self. Does anyone know where I might start. was thinking poss. the oring on the gas cap, or somehow air is getting in there. anyhow thanks for your help im new to the forum, and hopefully can help on other symptoms.
The popping could be as a result of many things. You fail to mention if it is carbed or injected. Your symptom fits a problem with injected bikes with a worn spot on the fuek line inside the tank. Give us some more info and maybe we can figure it out. What have you done recently to the bike? A lot of times it can be traced back to the last thing you've done.
If it's carbed, has it been rejetted? What exhaust? What intake?
Sorry about that, it is EFI. Let me give you a little more history, the bike sat for a bit while I was deployed when i returned the bike was running rough, of course I got rid of the old fuel, and got a standard service. Shortlly after that the problem started to rear its ugly head. at first, every now and then. I took it to hd, they looked at me like i was a moron....could not duplicate!!now it is very noticeable. I bought my service manual and started to attack the electrical beacaus of the intermittent scenario. no dice...after that my fuel column inside my tank got stuck so i let them go in and fix the column and put it on the dyno, they said again...could not duplicate. Kinda at a stand still, of course until I filled the tank last night and the problem seemed to go away. now I'm really confused, dont know if I am seeing to problems of one. Thanks for your help. I appreciate it.
