Default New Gaskets/Re-Torque

2011 Heritage Softail. new gaskets on Vance and Hines exhaust. Book calls for 100 to 120 inch pounds but a mechanic friend of mine said to go 65 inch pounds so thats what I did. Started it and rode it for about 30 minutes. Let it cool down, re-torqued to 65 inch pounds (they must have loosened up pretty good, took a good several turns to get it to 65 inch pounds again). Went for another ride, about 40 minutes, took a slight break and then another 40 minute ride. Let it cool, re-torqued again to 65 inch pounds and again it took a bit to tighten them up. No leaks.

Just curious, how many more hot/cool cycles with a re-torque is generally needed before the gaskets are set?

Why not torque them in proper sequence to the spec in the book and then not have to worry about them loosening up every time you ride? Every time I think that I know more than the people who engineered my bike it cost me more money lol.

With all the heat cycles these go through you would be surprised how loose they get when that gasket is set. Anti seize is your friend.

OP; These are "crush" gaskets and they're meant to seal w/pressure & tightness...65 in/lb is way too loos and you'll be re-torquing those forever. There is a sequence for tightening exhaust flange nuts...get a manual and follow it. Once you're done, ride for 50-miles & re-torque when bike is "hot." Then you're good to go...

Anti seize stops the nuts from loosening? Thats seems odd, since anti seize is made to keep the nuts from seizing on the studs, you would think that would enable the nuts to back off even easier?

Anti-seize keeps the nuts from seizing onto the studs. As others have said, install per manufactures specs.

Antiseize lubricates the threads and lets you get to the proper torque.
