Default Good performing low rumble slip-ons

Comming soon to a garage near me...05 Ultra. I would like to find a set of slip-ons to replace the california spec mufflers. preferences are not too much noise but enough to free things up. I have heard everything from using the 49 state pipes to vance and hines ovals. Over the weekend I experienced SE's and the touring mufflers. the SE's were way too loud. Were they possibly modified? I could not hear the touring mufflers over the volume of the SE's. opinions and comments please.

I had the dealer start up my bike ('05 FLHTCi) and another touring bike with SE slip-ons so I could hear the difference. For a Touring bike I preferred the 49 state stock exhaust. A low rumble actually a little louder than I expected. The SE slip-ons were too loud for me to put on "my" dresser. Plus the added incentive of saving several hundred dollars by not having to modify the bike anymore than I already was.

IMHO SE slip ons are the quietest of the exhaust modifications......I think most including myself not only change em for the performance aspect but also the noise. You may want to ride it for a while and get a broader perspective than at the dealer. You may also hear some on anothers ride that you like.

That's what I've heard too. Haven't heard all of the other brands to confirm but this seems to be the general consensus.

Hey guy's...
I'm back for a while...

On friday I plan on putting SE slip-ons on my 05 FXDCI.
I wanted to do the Vance & Hines Big Radius pipes but keep bouncing back and forth...
The sound of the SE are alot better than stock...

I'm surprised you said that the SEs were too loud and louder than others. V&H are louder than mine, I think significantly louder. I've not heard the 49 States.

I have a 2000 95" big bore rk with a 44mm carb. Right now I'm running the stock headers with v&h classic slip-ons, straight cuts with end caps. I'm not sure they are still making these mufflers but you can find them at the usual parts online sites. Beware, I'm on my third set of end caps...the chrome has flaked of the first two sets and the end capas are hard to find.

Be that as it may, I removed the packing from the baffles and the tone got deeper, not louder. At crusing speeed, you here the rumble but it is not loud. You can carry a conversation with a passenger with relative ease. I like the sound but wish they were a tad bit louder. A friend runs the classic ovals and they sound good, not much different from mine, but not quite at the volume I prefer. So if you are looking for a realtively quiet yet deep pipes, v&H IMHO are quite good.

No ... I meant they fit price wise....
They are sinificantly louder than stock....
Just not quite as loud as the V&H pipes.

Ok so what I have done so far is find a pair of 49 state OE slip on's for $30.00 (e-bay). They look very simple inside. Two Quarter size blind caps with one small hole in each. The emission warnining information says does not exceed 80db for noise. Another thread somewhere here in VTwinTalk indicated knocking out the outermost plug. I may do that later. First I need the bike to install them on. The right wrist is twitching like a pick pockets hand aproaching an easy mark. When the bike gets here (apprx 35 days and counting) I will inspect both and try to determine a difference. Anybody Know the db rating on the California spec mufflers? This waiting stuff is getting re-dink-u-lus. Enough ranting... opinions please.
