I know pipes and mufflers are talked about here a lot. Sorry for another question about them. But I'll ask anyway...
If I wanted to get deeper, mellow but slightly more agressive than stock sound w/o getting too much louder, what slip-ons do you recommend? I don't need performance. Just deep character w/o too much extra volume. For reference, I heard the '07 street legal SE slip-on's at the dealer and I thought they were loud and tinny and lacked refined tone. How about slip-ons with deep reserved forward character?
The HD Touring mufflers are my choice. I tried several others on my05 Ultra, all were too loud. The Touring slip ons have a deep rumble and are quiet on the road buthave a good sound. Louder than stock, quieter than any of the SE mufflers.
I have triedthree sets of pipes. First I went with the 06 SE slipons and they were too loud for long trips and they lacked bottom end performance. Then I tried the 07 SE street legal pipes and they were too quiet and had more bottom end power but the top end sucked.
The I went with the S&S oval slipons and they are great pipes in terms of performance, they sound great, louder than stock but quieter than the 06 slash cut slipons.
They take a little getting used in terms of looksbut I'll take the performance and sound over the look.
I have a set of Screaming eagle slip ons that I removed from a 07 Screaming eagle ultra. THey are loader that stock and are made for the 110 motor and would be a great improvment. If you are interested in them I can sell them to you for $250 plus shipping. THey come with heat shields and end caps. THey list for over $700. Only500 miles on them. Replaced with true duals. One of the heat shields has a slight ding in it that is underneath and not noticable. If you want I can email pics.

What...? screamin eagle too loud..??
i have screamin eagle slipon on my ultra, and i use it only for one day...TOO QUIET!!! and then i buy thunder header slip on....install it, woowww sound good but its still too quiet..so ..??
j/k man.... screamin eagle is the best bet ...deep, rumble, not too loud..... i use thunder header only to compete with my neighbour HDthat use athunder header too.... coz he always wake me up in the morning, if he warm the bike up.... now i wake his up in the morning...hahahaha....
Spend a weekend at the dealer and listen, ask lot's of question. We all like to talk shop. I just took off my stock 96 Evo mufflers and had Full Sac re-core them.. Theyrumble nice at idle and while louder, they don't crackle or bark like others. The only Pipes I have any personal contact with are mine now and my wife trike conversion with Bassini trike pipes, and a bud's 2000RKwith Vance and Hines slip ons. Mine are less than the Vance and Hines and about the same as the Bassini trike, until I open it up. The are re-cored with a stepped, through or openlouvered baffle. The Full Sac is an alternative both in economy and retaning stock look.
I hate to reread these tings; man do I sounded speakish challenged. ROTLChoking on my own spit.
