To tell you the truth my V&H Fishtails slipons have a nice deep sound...when idling. Once you crank her up above 3000 RPM though she starts screaming like a banshee.
Take the earlier advice: This weekend go to your local Harley shop and sit and listen, and when you hear something you like just ask the dude or dudette what the pipes/setup is. I can't listen to audio or video of pipes online because they all sound the same to me, and the opinions expressed here, while informed, are just what they are: opinions. What I think is deep and righteous you may think is just plain obnoxious.
I ordered a set of these modified stock mufflers off ebay. Actually, I just recieved them today, installed them a couple hours ago, and went for a ride.
And I like them. Deep-toned, maybe 5 decibels louder than stock. Inexpensive ($129), make the bike sound like a bike instead of a sewing machine, but won't announce my passing to everyone when I go to work at weird hours.
Now you want the truth? What you want in a muffler does not exist! You can not have a lower deeper tone without it being much louder when you get into it. I have used every kind and there are only 2 mufflers that are in the range you want for quiet, stock and the SE TOURING (which are 98% as closed up as stock) and neither will give you what you want as in deep throaty tones. Lots of deep toned mufflers out there vance and hines ovals probly being the best sounding without being obnoxious loud. But they are 15-25% louder than stock.
Some people can't under stand why people change pipes so often. They just don't get that were looking for the perfectsound that we want. Why settle for pipes if you don't like them just because you bought them. Keep changing and I hope you find what your looking for.
I know pipes and mufflers are talked about here a lot. Sorry for another question about them. But I'll ask anyway...
If I wanted to get deeper, mellow but slightly more agressive than stock sound w/o getting too much louder, what slip-ons do you recommend? I don't need performance. Just deep character w/o too much extra volume. For reference, I heard the '07 street legal SE slip-on's at the dealer and I thought they were loud and tinny and lacked refined tone. How about slip-ons with deep reserved forward character?
Check out the Peacemaker mufflers, then you can have
the best of both worlds. I just got mine yesterday!!
Does anyone know about V&H basic slip-ons? I just called the HD dealer and had him order those pipes for the 07 RKC I'm getting next month
Rico
I have them on my 2006 SG, along with the True Dual Headers. I love the sound and the performance. Not too loud, but people hear me when I want them to and I can still hear the radio at 75-80MPH...But some of that is due to the Hogtunes speakers!
