I recently was riding my 2003 FXDWG and accidently turned off my ignition switch while swatting a bee off of the tank. I then simply switched the ignition back on after a bit of fumbling about. Needless to say that resulted in a resounding backfire. The bike continued running ok and I proceeded home.. I noticed that the bike felt a bit less responsive. Upon reaching home I checked the exhaust pipes at the manifold and loosened and tightened the flange nuts to be sure the piees were snug Things seem ok, but somehow the bike doesn't seem quite as responsive as before the pop. No excessive decel pop has been evident. Is it possible that something else might have been affected or damaged?
hard to say since there is no history on what is on the machine
the backfire happened mostly in the exh sys. that said, i have seen the dampening parts damaged and either start rattling or even restricting flow.
you did not say if there was an intake blow back but things like map, maf and such sensors can be damaged. exh sensors are usually pretty tough but never say never.
probably just a figment of your mind, ride it like you stole it.
Thanks bustert. My bike is an early 2003 model and has a carberator as opposed to fuel injection so no sensors or mapping to worry about.. The only changes made engine wise is a cam replacement and a high input air filter. I am not sure what you mean with regard to dampening parts, but what concerns me a little was that I do hear a slight rattle when the engine is running that I wasn't aware of previously. I also have swapped out the OEM exhaust with Vance and Hines Big Shot pipes with the necessary rejetting of the carberator a while back at the dealer. Since my initial posting I have pulled the plugs and found them to be quite black. I changed them out with some older spares that seemed in better shape and notice a slight improvement. However, there still seems to be a subtle rattle...nothing profound. I know my bike and may be a bit more sensitive to the engine sounds it makes than others. Is there a way of checking further? I have ordered new exhaust gaskets and plugs as the gaskets were not changed the last time the pipes were removed and I assumed that new plugs would only improve things. I am an expat living in Bosnia and Hhezegovina with limited access to good advice so any additional info you might offer would be appreciated. Thanks
