Default Intermittent Grinding

Bike is a 2000 FXDWG with 10,100 miles. Has 95" kit, heads, high comp pistons.

It's making a grinding/spinning noise intermittently. Does it mostly in neutral at idle or when throttling off but it's always there. Doesn't seem to do it when revving. Sounds/feels like it's coming from down low...I can feel it on the case between the cylinders on the right side. Definitely NOT the primary chain...checked/adjusted it already.

This came on fairly suddenly and has since leveled out as far as frequency and volume. It's very apparent that's something isn't right at all.

Oh..it's also throwing the check engine light.

Are we talking cam bearings? Rod bearings? Main bearings? Oil pump? Stator?

Help!!!

Thanks.

Mike

I have similar problem with my 2001 with 9,000 miles. The cam bearings are fine. But I replaced the cam plate and oil pump do to minor wear marks, but the sound didn't go away. I am now believeing that the problem maybe in the primary at the comp. bolt

99 and 00 had a limited rear cam bearing recall. Most failures were because HD tired to use a roller bearing but since replaced it with a needle type. I would have a close look at the bearings and chain tensioners. If it has a major failure, you will either be looking at a complete cam chest rebuild and possibly a hole motor rebuild. The up date kit with the cams and all is still available. Also, if the bearing is going, check the oil pump and plate closely. If everything is shot, I would just update everything with the 06-07 up components.

If it is that apparent, then I would cease/desist operation of it, as you could very well be causing more harm than the existing issue.
Tear it down and find the culprit.
Repair, ride.

The only time one keeps running with bad mechanical sounds is when they are shooting at you.
All a matter of prioritys. And pocketbook.
