Here is how I set up a carb for mild power modifications, ie, pipes, SE air cleaner, and mild cam.

Replace the low jet one step up. For 80 inch that would be from 42 to 45. Not sure about 88 inch. Replace the factory needle with one from a 1988 Sportster 1200, cut 2 coils off of the slide return spring. Remove the plug on the bottom of the carb by drilling it with a small drill, then screwing in a wood screw just enough to get a grip. Pull the screw and the plug will pop out. The screw under this plug is for idle adjustment. Usually 2 turns out from full closed is just about right.

Regards,

Bill

That sounds like the one Bill. I'd just add one more step. Pull the plugs after you ride some. If they look black lean it out a tad. If they have a whitish look make it a little richer. Make small adjustments (1/4 turn on the mixture screw) and then check them again. Keep it up untill the plugs look the color of a brown paper bag and your there. Real high tech! LOL And, it works fine. BTW J&P Cycle is a good place to get jets. I didn't check but I think they have charts to recommend sizes as well. And, the catalog is great to keep in the John!

I'm really lazy though. Check the info on the jets you buy, but I'd use the stock needle and not mess with the slide. I don't race, for me, the result you get out the slide mod isn't worth the effort.

But, like I said, I'm lazy.

I was paging through J & P Cycles. You can get main jets for a CV carb for $2.99. Beats Dynojet kit costs.

I had installed a dynojet thunderslide kit in my CV carb 2002 Softail and was disappointed in the performance improvements. They cost around $130.00 plus installation. I would pass on this and invest in a new carb. I went to a 42mm Mikuni and the performance is great. You would see a big difference then.
