I would say 80% of the time my bike is missing, sometimes pops, and even hear a short air sucking sound coming from the engine now and then. The other 20% of the time it is running just fine. It doesnt mater if the engine is warm or cold. I had it looked at by 2 mechanics, the first guy was stumped, he checked the PC and it was fine. I changed the gas out and still had problems, plugs look good and are new.
I took it to another mechanic so it could get fixed and mapped, they rode it 30 miles and said it was running fine. I had to ask if he was sure it was my bike..he laughed. I had them map it...i picked it up and it was running fine. 2 days later i get on to ride and the problem is back again.
I talked toa 3rd mechanic yesterday and he told me WAWA gas could be my problem because it has small percentage of Etahnol in it. I spent a few bucks on a fuel additive hoping this would be the fix. Im thinking a fuel problem would be constant...so im not sure on that diagnosis. Ive ridden 40 miles with good gas with additive and still have the problem.
I never know when i start out if the bike is gonna run ruff or not. Little frustrated!!! My intake gasket were checked as well...no sign of sucking in air there. No engine work has been done on this bike. Last thing that was done is changed out handlebars.
Any advice on what to check next would be greatly appreciated. I did listen for a pin hole leak in the fuel line..no sound coming from within the gas tank.
This is the post that lead me to this site. You aren't crazy. My '05 Road King Custom does EXACTLY the same thing. I have tested the spark plug wires - 6000 ohms, in spec. No buildup of metal debris on the crankshaft position sensor, fuel pump test showed a solid 60 pounds and holding, cleaned the bit of corrosion off of the battery terminals, cleaned and reattached the ground wires at the frame, checked the connectors at the ignition switch and made sure that there weren't any pinched or chaffed wires, tried a wide variey of premium fuels and checked for any diagnostic codes (none found). The problem started prior to my ignition switch carpping out. When I brought it in for the bad switch they originally couldn't find the problem. The tech came out to the bike as I was attempting to start it and witnessed the problem first hand, otherwise it would have been another cannot duplicate problem . The new switch helped but only for a short (haha) while. The bike is running lean (NTF at the dealer) and the bike is running rough (unable to duplicate at the dealer).
Next on my list to do is to install new intake (EFI) gaskets (the rubber rings) and pull the coil and check that. After that I'm getting rid of the bike if I can't get this thing to run worth a carp. I've been riding motorcycles for 35 years and Harleys for 25 years. This is the worst new bike I've ever had. (I did have a used AMF Sporty, but even that is still running). Any suggestions?
