Default Making a 2 into 1?

Has anybody ever taken there stock head pipes and welded a plug just before the left side muffler and essentially "sp"turned it into a 2 into 1? Would this be comparable to a true 2 into 1? I was think of doing this then running a set ofD&D slip on muffler's. Do you think it would hurt having that little bit of "dead end" pipe on the left side? I have also considerd cutting the head pipe at the head and capping it there to eliminate the "dead end" section. If that section wont hurt anything though why go through the extra work, right. Any one have an opinion on this? Would it be just as well off performance wise to just keep it a crossover system?

I haven't tried it yet, but I'm about to. What I'm going to do is tack weld a plug into the crossover as close to the head as I can get it, so there isn't a long 'dead end' pipe, as you call it. I read in a performance column that this is a decent performance mod 'on the cheap', and seperately a local shop owner told me he's had good luck doing this. It makes sense to me, even though that little bit [maybe 3"] of 'dead end' pipe may create a bit of turbulence, and even though the front and rear pipes won't be equal length. There's a thread on this forum on dyno results for dressers, and if you read enough of them there is evidence of 2-into-1 pipes being vastly superior ot 'true duals' in terms of low-end torque. Maybe not top end power, but useable low-end power. I did not see anyone who had this modification chime in, and if I get my bike dyno'd my results won't really tell the story because there won't be a 'before' run to which the results could be compared. But like I said, it makes sense, and unless it's a conspiracy, two unrelated reports of the same thing from people who would know, and weren't trying to sell me something seem to lend this idea some credibility.
