Default Is it best to keep stock header or replace?

Hello everybody, my question comes from ignorance about exhaust systems. I have a stock 88 on a 06Road King Custom and I haven't made a decision on the exhaust. I know I am going with SERT and Stage I, but will it make a difference to replace the complete system, or just add slip on's to the existing headers? I would like to get the best bang for my buck,i.e. performance and sound. I really want a deep "classic Harley sound", without at this time, replacing the upper of the engine, making it a 95, 103,etc...

The best bang for the buck has always been a good pair of slip ons. On a stock bike you will get a smidgen more power from a complete system, and more torque from a 2-1 system. But you're talking big bux there. A good set of cylce shack slip ons was about $150 the last time I looked. Of course, your pipes have a catalytic converter in one of the mufflers. That may be an issue for you.

For my bike, I'll get a set of slip ons for now. Eventually, I'll replace them with a set of 2-1 pipes.

Thanks bobcowan,

I'm looking into the SE pro's for slip on's for now. They sound pretty good and are supposed to be a better performer than stock. I should see a difference when I open the air and fine tune with the SERT and Dyno also.

I see your in the Springs, I'm in Thornton. I wish this weather would make up it's mind. It makes it hard to plan a ride day until of course spring.

You will get very good performance from slip ons, I am a 2-1 fan but if that is not your style then slip ons will give you your moneys worth, the true dual set ups will have great sound but tend to give up the low end tq and in a 88 I would not give up any. A a/c slip ons and tuned 88 will make 70/80 on a regular basis.

HDWRENCH, Thanks for you input.
I've heard about the low end problem with true duals and your right, until I can "upgrade" to a larger cylinder, I can't afford to lose anything.

SE Slipons can be had for about $255 online. You will like them alot.

If you really think you may end up going duals you can always go V&H's and later on install their true dual headers.

Not really travelers, the wife and I don't have the means to travel. Actually, we enjoy long rides and stopping at night and then coming home. Also, day runs with friends. Yes, I would love to travel, but aren't old enough to retire, or have the money to retire. One day!

Dude That's freakin funny man.

Wideglidedan was saying Travelers right about the S&S Mufflers. He wasn't asking if you like to travel.[sm=funnypostabove.gif]
