Default 03 FXDWG problem

Hey all, I bought a 2003 Wide Glide about 6 months ago from an indy dealer. My first Harley after many crotch rockets, so I really didn't know what to look for or ask. Anyway, love the bike, everything has been great, but I have had this problem with it popping on acceleration. It almost sounds like the backfire on decel, but a little louder, and it makes the bike buck. Usually, this happens if I don't let the bike warm up enough, everyone said it was just cold blooded.

Coming home this past Sunday, the temp outside dropped about 10 degrees as it got darker, I was on the freeway for about 30 minutes, and it popped and bucked once, then that was it. So now I am a bit more concerned since it was obviously a hot engine. Thoughts?

Hey Mark,
Is the bike carb-ed??? My fathers wide glide does the same thing. I am going to try and fix this weekend by re jetting. I will let you know how it works out, maybe the same would work for you.

The air fuel ratio is lean . The colder it gets the more fuel you will need. A real quick test is pull the choke and if your popping goes away or gets better then you know you need to rejet. Do you know what was done to the bike before you bought it?? Air cleaner kit, pipes, carb kit. If the bike is a bone stock carb you would need to install a jet kit. You might get by with just opening the pilot fuel screw. There is a how to section here and it covers it. I am not a fan of the washer under the needle trick it can help sometimes and other times you create a overly rich section in the midrange. A simple dynojet kit would be a start if they have not installed one already. Let us know what you have in it know if you know.

Also look under the carb behind the fuel bowl and there is a hole there with a screw in it that is the pilot fuel screw. There may be a plug in there. If there is a plug in there you will need to remove the carb and drill it out to have acess to that screw for adjustment. If you have the carb off i wold also say that increasing the pilot jet size if it has not been done to a 45.

The screw should be lightly bottomed and then start at 1.5 - 2 turns out.

HDWRENCH - It has a stage 1 AC, and Santee shotgun style pipes on it, and it is carbed. The bike had only 3000 miles on it when I bought it, and that was 6 months ago, so who ever had it let it sit for a long time. It happened when I first bought it, and I took it back and they said it was junk in the fuel system...but now it's started doing it again.

piekaj - let me know how that turns out, so i know whether to take mine in or not.

Well if there is not rejetting then you knwo what you have to do. You could just add a 45 pilot set the screw to 2 turns to start and bump the main up one size and work from there. That would be a good starting point.

May be an intake leak. With it idle, spray WD-40 aroung the intake seals (making sure not to spray it directly into the air filter). If the idle changes then you have an intake leak and probably just need to change your seals.
