I have an '04 WG which I recently purchased and I'm having issues with the carb acting up.
From cold start I pull choke fully out, start it with no issues it idles fine. After about 30 seconds I push choke in to about 1/2 and let it warm up more.
I drive off slowly, and if I push choke fully in, I get a sputter and poofing sound upon acceleration.
I thought initially it was a fuel issue, but it idles, revs, and runs great at full, 1/2, and 1/4 choke.
The bike has Screaming Eagle II pipes but I have no records if there was rejetting done when they were installed.
Any ideas? Does it sound like a jetting/tuning issue?
I was looking at the CV Performance Stage 1 Tuners Kit on harley-performance.com
i have the Dynojet kit in mine and no issues for me. Take a look under your carb towards the engine, if you see a silver plug in a round hole at the back of the bowl the your carb could be stock, if there is no plug then you might have a kit installed , you can reach up with a slot screwdriver and give it a 1-8 turn counterclockwise and that will get you more fuel and may solve your problem. With freeflowing pipes and stage 1 air cleaner you would want that screw to be turned out 2.5 to 3 turns out if you have a kit installed
The mornings have been a bit cooler, leave the enrichener **** about half out and drive off. In about a mile push in the **** and see how the engine responds. The carb bikes are a bit catankerous in cooler/cold weather. That is one advantage EFI has over the carbs. What you are experiencing sounds pretty normal for a stock carb.
Yeah, I had this issue and it was annoying as hell. Adjusting the Idle Air screw helped quite a bit. No issues since switching to the Mikuni with the build though.
