I just read an article on "Dewy's Custom Parts" (www.deweyspegs.com) that claimed by removing the "football" style air cleaner hp gains of 7-15% were measured. They claim it was due to the fact that hot air from the engine was no longer getting sucked back into the engine. Is this possible, or are any gains due to a "ram effect" from the exposed air filter? Would this affect your fuel ratio? Remap? If true it seem like a simple and cheap perfromance up grade. Thanks for your thoughts.
I don`t know about the 15% and whether it is from the warm air.But ,the football isn`t exactly a worldclass breather. It`s an epa thing. The gov`t doesn`t want you or anybody else hearing your induction system.Remember the old days when you used to flip the breather cover on the old mans chevy and heard the 4-barrel go Bwaaaaa. The kill-joys won`t allow that anymore-meaning restriction. With the breather on my bike I can hear the carb all the time, and it makes good power with a k&n filter. You will have to re-map ,tune.Maybe 15% w/exhaust at the same time with tune. But just breather,no.There`s a myriad of good induction air cleaners on the market that will give far better results than stock. You just have to pick one.Toby
I have an SE air filter now, but still have the football cover. I was thinking of installing an HD filter cover insert directly on the SE air filter in place of the football. Other than during a very hard rain storm, do you see any problems?
Do a search of the forums for "WS6". Mud is doing some awesome mods to stock football covers. He is doing mine as I type this and can't wait for it to get back.
The cover dosnt do **** though, Its all in the air cleaner. I had the A/N big sucker K&N filter on it, then I put the Zippers "Bigger Sucker" on and had even more power on tap!
