Ever since I put my S&S heads back on my TC A engine early last summer, I've had crankcase vent problems. I recently disassembled therocker arm assy and removed rocker box and I think I found the problem. In the rear head it has the S&S style vent port meaning that 1/2 of the crankcase ventport's length is in the head and the other 1/2 of theport's passage is in the rocker box. The two ventport'sends meet in the middle andoverlap forming the total length of theport. The problem Ifound is that the rocker box cover gasket does not have a hole in it to allow thecrossover of the two ventports from rocker box ventport downto head vent portthus plugging the crankcase's vent capabilities in the rear cyl, which explains the problems I was having. The front S&S head has the conventional HD portbuilt into the head not neccessitating this extra hole in the gasket and all of my crankcase ventilation was only going thru this head.
My confusion is that S&S states that a standard HDrocker box gasket will work, such asI had on it, but I don't understand how it can workbecause it does not have thisextra hole in it. I've attempted to reach S&S tech by phonebutput oneternal hold and have emailed their tech support two days ago. Before I punch a hole thru a gasket to potentiallyresolve this issue, I'd like to know why this is not covered in theirTechnical Bulletin,http://www.sscycle.com/modules/instr.../51-1158.pdfor what am I missing here? I purchased this bike used so I'm not sure what gasket was on it before. Let this be a lesson, always overlay and match new gaskets to old gaskets before installing them.
Any shared knowledge of this issue would be appreciated.
As far as I know you have to run the S&S rocker boxes with thier heads. They also have one rocker box gasket set for cast rocker boxes and one for billet rocker boxes.I don't belive you can run stock rocker boxes with thier heads.
Thanks for the reply. As I dig deeper the plot thickens. What I figured out is that the engine builder modified theHD rocker box to work with the S&S head. However, he did not modify the rocker gasket to work withthis combo thus I have been crankcase venting thru the front head only which explains my backpressure and excess oil problems. Will reassemble with modded gasket. Will tee into oil reservoir vent tube and run this and the head vents up into a catch can, then vent this back to intake to be EPA friendly.
