Default rocker box gaskets

so im replacing the gaskets in/under the rocker boxes and the service manual says "rotate crankshaft until both valves are closed on head being removed." Is this needed if im just replacing gaskets under the rocker boxes and not removing the head. Is there any tricky parts to removing the rocker boxes that i have to get right reinstalling them or risk damage?

That instruction relates to installing the rockers themselves, I think you will find. If you are only replacing the gaskets for the top cover you should be fine.

Crip, the leak is most likely the rocker cover gasket, I replaced both on my rear cylinder and realized that the rocker support gasket was not leaking. I didn't replace the front rocker support gasket just the rocker cover gasket. there may be a reason to place the piston at TDC, the rocker cover is areal tight fit to slide out of there and a pushrod that is up will interfere.
Picture #1 is how the leak manifested itsself Picture #2 is the actual leak where you see the distortion in the gasket and dirt inside it.
Picture #3 is what you'll see inside, partly.

You'll want the extra bit of clearance with the rockers down.

One thing I found really handy was this rocker cover wrench from Dennis Kirk. Not only does it let you get in those tight spots, it lets you get a torque wrench on them.

Thats exactly what I am replacing, mines leaking from the front cylinder. So I just crank it until both push rods are down? is it easy to damage the bike messing with the push rods?

You won't damage the bike, but the rocker box won't sit flat if one of the valves is open. If you take the top covers off the bike and watch as you turn the motor over, all will become clear. Disconnect the battery before you start work and DO NOT use the starter! Lift the rear wheel a little off the ground, engage top gear and turn the wheel slowly. Remove the spark plugs as well, to reduce resistance.

there is a great write up in the how to section on this replacement. step by step and with pictures. I have used this as a reference on both my front and rear gaskets.
