Default Cam Check

1975 XLH Ironhead Sportster. +.040 pistons, otherwise stock. Exhaust=Drag pipes w/some kind if fiberglass embedded baffeles.

Is there any way to check what kind of cam shafts are installed in this bike.
Would measureing the height, or travel of the lifters give any indication.
If it DOES happen to have non stock cams, should I adjust the timeing back a little from factory stock @40degrees BTDC. so it does'nt run soo hot.
I always use priemium fuel. Valvoline 50 wt oil.
Thanks,
Reffixer.

Yes fixxer, you can do as you say. Use a degree wheel and measure the lifter travel for cam timing. You would have to compare your specs. to those of the different manufacturers. Lift would take into account any rocker ratios. IMO, I would loosen the pushrods and remove the cover, if your careful you can keep the cams from falling out and remove only one for a number. You may not get a name but you should be able to determine whose part from the number.

There are too many cam's with very similiar grind profiles, using a degree wheel is not going to tell you what you have in there with any accuracy especially without knowing the mfg. of the cam and how it measures its own cam specs, especially on an older bike. The cams will need to be removed and inspected physcially.
