EVO motor question

Default EVO motor question

I just got a 94 fxdwg. it has 19k miles on it. the gentle man i bought it from basically gave it away. it has not been ridden in a while.
my question is: when i am riding it, i hear a tapping or slight knocking sound. it moves faster with increase throttle. i was told this is normal for a bike that has been sitting. somebody said to take it easy for the first 500-1000 miles b/c the lifters are seating. then it should go away. is this correct and could anyone elaborate on this?

all help would be appreciated.

I am really excited about becoming a part of this board and the community of HD.

First of all, welcome to the community of this forum and welcome to the HD world.

The bike you've got is a great bike. I love evo motor and I'm sure you'll love it. Therefore, this motor has its own personality, as it has its own sounds and vibrations. If the knocking you hear is slight, I think that you don't have to worry about it. Just let pass some time, ride and ride, and see how the sound goes. When you own a new bike, you need a bit of time to understand it, and I'm sure that you'll do.

Welcome again and try to post some pics of your bike so we can see it.

I worry if mine doesn't make noise. There could be lots of reasons for yours. If it has been sitting awhile, changing all the fluids should be the first thing you do. Buy a genuine Harley service manual for it. Could be a lifter that is not pumping up and rattling a little. Is it coming from top, bottom or side? See what happens after an oil change. Take it to somebody that knows Harleys and get their opinion if you are not comfortable with it. Post some pics. Have fun. Let us know what goes on. JMHO, YMMV, etc.

My Evo "talks" from many sources. I don't have a big tank and seat to block any of the sounds from the engine so can hear all that goes on down there. It has always been noisy compared to other makes I have owned. It's not as "busy" as a shovel or pan but when I wear my FF helmet I only hear the music of the drag pipes. Having ridden it for 12+ yrs, I can pick out the different sounds. The valves clicking into their seats, the cylinders firing, the whirr of the cam and the gears meshing in the trans. If somethings's not right, I will hear that as an unusual sound and will investigate. Good Luck and enjoy the ride!

Just give it some time if it's been sitting. BTW - in '94 significant improvements were made to
the EVO by the factory that corrected some earlier problems like cold oil puking. Just stay
with petroleum oil as switching to synthetic in an older engine often ends up with leaks.
Synthetic 75-90 gear oil in the tranny is probably a good move though - 22 oz.

All harleys make noise they can't help talking to you. Just make sure you monitor the noise and if it gets worse then more investigation is needed. What you need to pay attention to is the little guy inside with the hammer trying to beat his way out type of noise. Harleys also vibrate and shake things loose so sometime it's the pipe banging or someone put the exhaust gaskets in upside down, the primary chain is loose, lifters loose. top end screen plugged. Front primary sprocket loose. Compensator sprocket noise. Tank rubbers hard or worn. Dash loose all this stuff makes noise so while your cleaning and polishing your baby take a close look at things tighten up bolts and get a big bottle of blue locktite use it on everything, also get a torque wrench and a manual since a lot of damage is done by over tightening. Also pay attention if it happens when hot or cold on the hwy or idle little things like that can help figure out the problem.
