I have an '07 Ultra with just a set of Rinehart slip-ons and a race tune and did 4000 miles out to the Carolina coast and back to Minnesota via West Virginia 2 up and a s... load of luggage.I encountered all kinds of Mountain grades and had no problem. I don't care what you're riding or driving you're gonna have to grab another gear to make some of those grades.
I had no problem with either the 88 or the 96. I will say that i took the 88 to a 95 and it smoked the 88 performance wise and ever where else. The same goes for the 96 to a 103. The 103 is smokes the 96. But on both motores I did cams, pistons, heads, and sert.
I agree with some of the complaints about a 96. However I belive that in the long run a 96 is a much stronger engine. Most people upgrade the exhaust and air breather. After I put V&H BS Longs and a SE Stage 1 air breather on, I noticed quite a bit of difference in HP. Enough that I don't feel that I need to bolt on the 103 or upgrade to the 110.
My 6th gear works n pulls fine. I don't need to be going 80 to use it either, it pulls good at 60-70-and 80 and does well at top end. Either I'm missing something or we just disagree.
What does a broken torque curve look like? I have never had that happen. I own an 88, 99 fxd
and I own a 2012 FXDC. The 96 with the cruise drive is a different animal, but the 95
perfect 100 Cyclerama motor is a real piece of work in the 99. Some of the stuff I read about 96's is kinda spooky, like crank runout. The electrical system is a challenge on the new bikes also

+3! Really sucks riding an 88" or 95" when everyone else is on 96's with 6 speeds & 6 gallons of fuel. Guess who's in desperate need of fuel stops when everyone else has 2+ gallons left...
