Default one for the experts

Hi guys.first I have plenty of engine knowledge .so please dont act like Im newbie, its aggrivating as hell.
My question is/If moving the drive gear one tooth advance whats the change in timing. 31 on small gear(engine) 62 on big(cams) hence the 2:1 ratio.weve had few discussions around shop.I say its 6 degrees per tooth, but take two roataions for ful 6 degrees so its 3 degrees( yea not exactly 6 but very close).buddy days no its 2:1 so its 12.Lets have a vote on whos right.I need the extra beer riding on out come,.

I don't want to think this hard in the morning but off the top of my head I would say it is not going to be only 3 degrees or it would be a popular way to advance or retard your timing by only 3 degrees. there is a reason that advancing or retarding is not done this way. Later when I have my little brain warmed up I will sit down and figure it out LOL> I guess I really had no business responding to this as I am far from an expert.

360 degrees divided by 31 = 11.61 degrees The crank shaft will be in a different position by 11.61*.

11.6crank degrees,5.8 cam degrees. Normally, if we state that we have advanced the cam by4 degrees, to be more "proper" it should have been stated, "we have advanced the cam by 4 crank degrees to avoid confusion.

Similarconcept but the other way around, with engines using an ignition distributor, if someone states, "we turned the distributorto advance the ignitiontiming by 4 degrees", they rotated the distributor 2 degrees to advance the timing 4 crankdegrees because the distributor, like the cam, rotates 1/2 degree per the crank's 1 degree.

as geargrinder said 11.6 degrees. The degree wheel goes on the crank, and cam timing figures are expressed in crankshaft degrees. In effect by moving the chain one tooth, you're changing the cranks relationship to the cam one crank tooth: 360 divided by 31=11.6

You are figuring out a ratio between the two gears....don't forget it's the cam timing difference your looking for so you would have to measure the open and close of the cam lobe at .053 lift measured with a dial guage, then read your degree wheel at that point......I say 17 degrees for on tooth off.
