When I returned from my ride on Monday I noticed oil film on the leading edge of my rear header and on the leading edge of the rear cylinder's push rod tubes. In addition the base of the front cylinder looks moist and has an oil film on it all the way around. Am I wrong in assuming that my base gasket is leaking? I'm planning a 4000 mile trip in June. Do ya'll recommend that I replace the gasket set before I leave or can this wait until the end of the riding season. This may be a no brainer to those of you who are mechanically inclined so I'll just plead ignorance and await you advise. Thanks!
First off welcome to the forum.....one of the rules here is the first question cost $50.00 payable to me ....my address is at the bottom of this post.
Naaaaa...just kidding with you.
What model bike do you have and do you have an SE air filter kit installed? How hard did you run the bike before you seen an oil film?
It's a 1998 Road King EFI; S&S VFI with Oxygen sensors; Arlen Ness Big sucker, Mag Marelli modified by Gerolamy, V&H Big Shots with crossover; EV-27 cam; Baker DD-6; everything else relatively stock. 45,000 miles.
Up until now engine has been clean and tight.
The ride on Monday was a mixture of 60-80MPH. I try to never push my engine too hard.
When I get the check I will answer your question...
Actually and unfortunately the base gasket on the EVO will get worse very quickly. This is a paper gasket and when it starts to leak the pressure in the crank case, from every down stroke of the piston, will blow out the gasket more until the paperfails then you will have oil ever where. Personally I would change it before the 4000 mile run.
Base gaskets and rocker gaskets have been a real problem for the EVO.....it is SO important to warm up these motors easy so the expansion of the motor doesn't damage the gaskets.
Okay now....a dollar for every word minus 50 cents for a miss spelled word equals...........
Doc Gave you some great info. I agree 100% change it before you go. The evo base leak is a common issue. I no longer use the paper gaskets and use only the cometic coatedmetal base gaskets. They are much better at preventing base leaks,.. Not had one come back yet with this gasket ( knock on wood) When you do change the gaksets make sure you base of the cylinder is flat. And again a warm up of the engine before riding is very important as Doc already said.
