Default RevTech 100" top end noise

I have a 100 revtech in my 97 FLHR. It has had its share of problems . . . the engine has about 30,000 miles on it. had a ring go bad and tore up the skirt on my front piston - so I replaced the pistons at 20K - bored .030 over at that point. Everything was ducky until the pinion shaft sheared last fall. Rebuilt the bottom end using all revtech parts. Got 500 slow and easy miles onit, and all of the sudden I have top end noise. No metal in the oil. Sounds like a collapsed lifter. Especially loud when cold, and also when there is a load on the engine. Basically clears up when idling hot or when driving and not accelerating.

I pulled the pushrod covers and the front exhaust valve pushrod has a very slight amount of play in it. I can pull on it and feel it shift probably about 1/32" or so. All the other pushrods feel tight. I replaced the lifters, no change at all. Visually all of the valve train parts seemed to be OK - no play in any components - everything "looked" the same on both heads (no end play issues)

Just pulled the head, and the exhaust valve keeper is cracked. Still nothing seems loose or otherwise out of place. I cant understand how a cracked valve spring keeper could cause this noise. But its sure awful coincidental that the same piece of the valve train that seems to be makin the noise has a cracked part and a loose pushrod for no apparent reason.

I think I am gonna pull the valve springs out and see if I have a cracked spring? or mebbe a bad valve guide? I am a little baffled. Just wonderin if anyone has any brighter ideas to check out. THANKS!

Check the inner cam bearing for the cam as well. These are prone to breaking the case in that area. Rev motors are not a high quality item from the start. The Gen III engines are better than previous years. A cracked retainer is a huge deal, it you have a keeper pop out it will drop the valve into the engine. We have seen several drop a valve, crack the case at the cam bearing, loose needle from the lifters, etc. I am suprised that you have spent the amount of money on that engine thus far. I wish you the best.

Thanks. I will check that out. I have learned my lesson about revtech. In retrospect I could have purchased a new S&S for the same as I have put into repairing this thing. Thanx again.
