I have a question concerning upgrading my TC 88 to a 95" big bore kit. I've already decided to do my cams seeing as the bike is in 325162 pieces anyways and it doesn't look like I'll have it done before the snow falls do to time constraints (besides that it's a 1999 and I'm sure to have the cam bearings fail eventually). The cams I've picked are the 37G from Andrews which sounded like a pretty good choice to improve my overall hp. What I was wondering is whether it would be beneficial to get my heads machined in order to get maximum benefits from the new displacement. Maybe surface them slightly to increase compression and maybe larger valves? If so, how much? Obviously I don't want to go to extremes and make it necessary to do anything to my bottom end. Maybe they're fine the way they are? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
You're going to get a bigger bang for your buck on headwork verses anything else you do to your bike. anything else from the air cleaner to pipes to cams will only fully benefit with accompanying headwork. Being that your bike is a 99, your lower end should be all set because you already have the Timken bearing in the left half of your case verses the straight/roller bearing HD went to in 2003. The newer design gives too much play, no strength and can't handle the power sent to the left side of the case - nevermind the factory spec of 12 thous runout being within spec. With the gear driven cams, you have to be no more than 3 thous runout on the shaft. So, yours being an 99, you're prob 3 thous or less required for the gear driven cams and the Timken you have in yours can handle the load...if you were to split the cases and weld the crank, you'd get the added insurance of a bulletproof lower end. head work is deffinantly a good place to spend some coin.
My feeling is if you want to do head work get high lift cams too. and get the whole thing working together. That said, I had the 37s with stock heads and they work very well, but when I went with head work I went with the HQ .575 cams and there is no looking back!

CNC port your orginal heads, set compression to 9.8..1 and that cam will run very well. Valve size that would give you great streetable power would be 1.9 intake and 1.625 ex. We have done hundreds of these builds and they run very well. There are other cams that would offer more power but since you have that I would think with a good pipe that and properly ported heads you would see 100/100.
