I have torque cones installed on my bike from the previous owner and I want to remove them to see the difference. Would this be bad? I really don't want to destroy my engine.
I know I am old and stupid, but what are torque cones?
Torque Cone: A conical device slipped inside an exhaust pipe near the flange that reduces the initial inside diameter of the pipe to create backpressure. Packing: Material, typically fiberglass, used to pack a muffler between the core and muffler body for sound damping purposes.
What type exhaust system do you have?
I currently run Samson Rip Saws, which are 1-3/4" drag pipes. The previous owner had them put on. He also had power cones installed at the head end. They are another name for torque cones. Torque cones make a big difference in drag pipes. My SE Fat Boy with the 103" engine runs perfect with this setup. My only complaint is that the pipes are annoyingly loud, so I am switching to a Fat Cat 2 into 1 system with the quiet baffle.
Tom
IMHO, if you want to run tq cones thats fine, but its easier to stick a banana in your tailpipe. They just choke down the exhaust port to try and get back the lost tq from the drag pipes. If you must run drag pipes, istall a bolt with washers and/or nuts towards the end of it. That will help a bunch, but might take some of the raspyness of drap pipes away as well.
Well I took out my torque cones last night, started my bike up and BOOM! flames shooting out my pipes. apparently these things were doing something. the sound was the exact same, level and tone wise. the flames were the only added feature of removing them. so tonight I will be reinstalling the torque cones, i dont need a batmobile.
