I have seen the new bikes with the fob that has to be present to start the bike, quit due a faulty battery in the fob!! Start and quit is a symptom of a tssm pass word un learned. EFI willnot run without a battery, you must have at least 9.6-10 volts for the ecm and without a battery the system gets very confused and will not staying running, I have seen them start but would not run much over 1000 rpm. year model vs ecm program will effect that.
Fuel psi test is in order, many times the coating on the tank falls off and will be in large chunks and stop fuel delivery
I had the same thing happen to me today as I was leaving work on my 2000 FXST. I was on the interstate for about 15 minutes going around 80 on the inside lane and she died just like that. As I was coasting to a stop (with the hair rising on my back) all I noticed was the engine lite was on and the speed needle jumped a few times. Once I was stopped on the sholder I cut everything off. Turned everthing back on and she fired right up. I drove another 10 miles on the outside lane to home without any problem. I had just got gas the day before from a hole in the wall station. Checking gas
Battery cables are the most logical place to start, but mine used to do the exact same as yours, but wasn't the battery cables. I have the factory Security System and didn't have any issues until I installed the Running Light/Brake Light/Turn Signal Adaptor. I too would be cruising along and the bike shut down, wait a few minutes and she fires off. The Light Adaptor mod was sending a signal to the ECM activating the Security System while in motion. Once I took the Mod off, all was well. So, do you have a security system and the Tail Light Mod???
I've always assumed it has played a part with the Security System as the light mod is plugged in between the harness and the security System is tied into your Turn Signals.
Anyway, since I've removed mine, it has never shut down again!
It doesn't hurt to remove it, run it and see what happens. If it shuts down again, you just eliminated the light mod!
