I have talked to a LOT of folks. My first attempt to fix this noise will be new HD lifters and adj pushrods.
Here's what has been explained to me. If engine is basically quiet when cold but gets 'ticky' when warm.... this can be from the jugs, etc. 'growing' when they warm up. If the original factory build was right on the edge for deck height, etc. this 'growth' can cause the lifters to NOT be able to compensate, like they do with slightly shorter jugs, etc., because the factory pushrods are the length they are.
Adj pushrods can be adjusted deeper into the lifter, and then when warm, they will still be into the lifter enough to allow the lifter to hold the slack.
My 06 clicks as well. I am budgeting for a 95" build as we speak. Might give in to the desire for new shiny wheels first though. Anyway, this noise bugs me too.
The dealers will tell you that these noises are normal or that they can't here it, that is B.S. as far as I'm concerned and I can't believe that the motor production people do not have a quality control system that monitors build quality. But on the other hand I can also see where the dealers won't address these noise issues as they can be hard to find sometimes.
The rocker end play is easy to check and common source of noise. Make sure you check clearance while the supports are bolted to the head. Mine were .015 and I added .010 shovelhead shims to get .005 clearance, nice and quiet. Mike
