Default Break in after Kit install

Got the call from my guy to tell me my 103 is done, ready to pick up when the weather permits. Said i should get about 1000 miles on it before he'd put it on the dyno and really tune it in. My question for the many, break in.....What have guys done to be sure the best break in is done?

from Hastings;
http://www.hastingsmfg.com/ServiceTi..._procedure.htm

OR this, which is basically the same as Hastings:

1) After build, start bike and allow to idle until lifters pump up
and clatter subsides. Shut off and check for / address any leaks or
other issues.

2) Prepare yourself (gear) for a break-in ride.

3) Start bike and allow to warm of about 3 minutes.

4) Head out to a road with little traffic & hopefully no cops (ideally,
have someone follow you to "control" traffic behind you).

5) On a fairly striaght stretch, in 3rd gear, get your speed up to
30mph. Twist the throttle open 100% (WFO) and allow the bike to
accellerate to 60mph.

6) @ 60mph, immediately close the throttle to 0% and decel (coast)
back down to 30mph.

7) Repeat steps 5 & 6, back to back, until you have done it 10 times.

8) Ride as you normally would to get 50~100 miles on the bike.

9) Change oil. "Break-in" is done at this point.

10) Ride as you normally would to ~500 miles & change oil again.
11)

That's it.

if your builder has a problem with this method, then I would say he does not have confidence that his tolerances are correct. (piston fit and ring gaps)

One thing I would add is to start the bike and let run for 15-20 sec.
Shut down.
Let cool down a little.
Do this three times.

The reason is to let the rings say hello to the cilender walls for the first time. The friction, at those contack points for that first time, can cause micro welds (metal transfer) if you let it run more that a few seconds.

I agree with doing heat cycles which is what I did then I rode the bike for 400 miles varying the RMP's and load then put it on the dyno. The reason I put 400 on it was it just worked out that way. IMHO 250 should be enough. New motors are ran ont he dyno at the factory with no miles on them.

Thumbs up 103 in the works

103- I'm having mine done at present. Was told to break in as posted here. Can't wait until I get the call that the build is complete. Waiting .... for good weather too.

Ride Safe,

Mark
