Default Wrong 0-ring?

I been reading a few posts about oil pumps being a tight fit into the crank case. I took my old o-ring with me to my indy along with the two smaller ones. He put three in a bag and away I went. My pump/ gear cam install went smooth, maybe too smooth. My pump went in pretty easy. A little wiggle and I moved along with the install. Are they always hard to install with the proper o-ring, or do they sometimes go in with just a wiggle? It was a black o-ring. Looked like the one that came in it. What will happen if it is say a lower rocker box 0-ring?

I have done oil pumps a bunch of times and never had any problems just pushing them in.
