We need more info (and more punctuation, LOL!) to properly diagnose the noise. Can you describe what it sounds like? Where is it coming from? Get yourself a mechanic's stethoscope (or use a long screwdriver held to your ear) to pin point the source of the noise.

Did you assemble everything as per the factory service manual? Did you check all tolerances before and during assembly? Did you use assembly lube on the parts when installing them? Did you check your rocker arms and bushings? Is oil getting to the top end? What's your pressure?

The more info you can provide, the better chance we will have at figuring it out.

By the way, how'd ya start it without the primary chain installed?

Ok.the noise is more of a grinding sound. It seems more noticable on right side of motor but even with listening device hard to tell.To start it without primary we used a socket and a dodge starter to start it.Dont know what pressure we have but it is enough so the light doesn't come on.There was oil in the top end when we pulled motor apart so seems to be oiling ok.When we started it the lagre magnetic part of stator was off so we half way eliminated the noise coming from stator.I have not pulled oil pump off yet don't know if anything in it could grind or not.And the sound is between a grind and a knock,Hope this is a little better description of noise.HELP!!I don't want to spend another grand if I can help it,but she has to run right.anyone can call if they want a history what I have done already.day 918-684-9900 ask for jim in parts or 918-351-5130 thanks for any help.

OK, we'll go with the easier stuff first. It's really hard to narrow down without actually hearing it myself, but here's some of the first things I'd take a look at.

Yeah, check the oil pump and breather gear.
Have you noticed any metal filings in the oil? Check the mag plug and then drain oil through some white cheesecloth to catch any debris.
Have to taken apart the rockers and checked them?
How about the lifters and lifter blocks?
Is the cam stock?
If not, did you check for clearances in the case and lifter blocks?
Is is shimmed correctly for end play?
Are the new pistons and cylinders stock-type or high compression?
Did you check for valve to piston clearance (clay the pistons) when you installed them?
Head and base gaskets installed in the correct orientation?
Possible sticking valve?
Did you check the clearances between the valve springs and the rocker covers? Look for signs of rubbing.

There are a lot of areas where parts come in very close proximity to each other, especially once the engine heats up. It's good to set tolerances to a minimum of .060 inch when cold to allow for heat expansion. The manual has all the required tolerances.

That's all I can think of at the moment without acutally hearing it.

Hello! You still there? It would be nice if more people posted the results of their repairs so others will know what to do if it happens to them.

Good idea! You could record it as a wav file and post it here or email it.

I have a 95 Ultra with about 25k on the second motor(shop forgot to secure the wrist pin, scored my cylinder and I made them put in a new engine. I had soem grinding or rubbing noises also. Would do it on accceleration but not on decel. I had the cam checked and the cam and tappets replaced, had all the bearings checked, everything me or my wrench could think of. No solution. He said, just ride it, who knows?

While doing some cleaning I noticed the front engine mount was not only cracked but separted. Ordered a new one and installed it, guess what? No noise from the upper end. MAkes me thing I wasted $1400 on rebuild work when a $20 part might have fixed it.

Long story short, check yoour front mount, hell while you're at it, check the back ones too !
