What ignition are you using? Do you still have the VOES connected? That is detonation big time.
What is the compression ratio and what are the specs on the cam?
Ignition is dyna 2000i and voes is connected.
Comp ratio is about 10:1 altitude correction 9.2:1 using BigBoyz calc and the cam is a Woods W6. However, my Cold compression is about 10 lbs higher than the calc.
With a w-6 10:1 to should be ok. ( A good cam choice)
I would suspect too much timing advance, too lean of a carb jetting or an intake leak.
What is you timing and how is your carb jetted? What carb are you using?
Is the intake still attached with the early rubber style compliance fittings?
I think you are dead on. Really makes sense when I go back and look at the pix. The 2000i ignition is set on a midrange curve .... don't remember offhand which micro switch setting but it's not too drastic and the VOES is online. Carb is a Mikuni HR 40 tuned by the book. Intake manifold is the old rubber sucker. Looks like a leak or maybe I F***ed up when I set the ignition.
Gives me plenty to think about when I put it back together. The only Harley I've rebuilt before was a 1969 Sporty with magneto and spark advance on the grip. I rebuilt a Kaw 900Z twice before I was happy with it. No problems, just kept wanting more HP. Had big bore, big cam, big pistons, four big carbs and ran like a turpentined cat from 7000 to 10000.
Hard to believe I let that drastic detonation get by me. I expected a different sounding engine with the cam and all, but that's pure stupidity.
Check the rubber fittings for a crack, then replace it with a modern intake with seals and metal flanges. S&S should have the manifold with the proper flange for the Mikuni. Use one that doesn't need a stack of adapters to mount the carb.
Also recheck the static timing for the ignition to be sure it isn't advance, then increase the timing in steps with the switches until performance increases and you don't get any preignition.
