Default Vance & Hines modification

Hey everyone. I just purchased a 2006 Road King that came w/ a set of basic V&H slip ons 4". I thought they were way to quiet for me so I got a pair of Bassini slip ons from a friend that replaced them w/ Thunderheaders. While in the garage we took out the baffles and removed the fiberglass packing just to hear what they sounded like w/o all the packing. It was louder but had that tinny open hollow sound that didnt sound very good. I got some header wrap and wrapped the baffles to give it a more dense packing that wasnt as absorbent. I figured it would allow a bit more flow but still give it just a little muffle and bring down the high pitch ting sound. OMG! This worked like a charm. They now sound like the Thunderheaders that my friend has. We were amazed. Before you change out pipes. try this and see if you like it. Ive read of people using stovepipe rope but if you cant find any just get a roll of header wrap and try. I found some wrap at the local auto parts store ( Pep Boys ) for $38.00

I pulled the baffles out of my 2009 Street Glide last week, took out the packing, and then replaced and changed fuel settings as well. It does sound "tinny", and I've been wondering whether I should buy Big City Thunder baffles or try something else. I think I'll give your idea a shot. I love the sound of the pipes with no baffles at all, but I also know what that lack of backpressure does to the low-end torque performance.

Thanks for the info...

I did it last night and it did take away the "tinny" tone of the exhaust. I have one question for you though - what did you secure the wrap to the pipes with? I went with a worm gear clamp, but I was wondering if something as simple as duct tape would have worked since it's enclosed on both ends of the baffle. Not sure what the heat would have done to the tape, etc.
